<h2>Taking stock and making change</h2>
<p>The year is 2008: Jeff Gothelf is the Director of UX at NYC tech company TheLadders. Having incrementally clawed his way up to middle management and become a proud husband and father to two children along the way, anyone would agree that Jeff has &ndash; to quote a phrase &ndash; &ldquo;<em>made it in life</em>.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Yet, on the morning of his 35th birthday, he woke up in a cold sweat, overcome by a flash of panic that his skillset would soon not be enough to compete with the hoards of younger UX designers that were charging their way up the career ladder at an alarming pace.</p>
<p>Competing in the jobs market had suddenly become a terrifying prospect.</p>
<p>No one wants to go the way of the dodo, and no one wants to be replaced by a younger model. In acknowledging this, Jeff had a starting point for becoming invincible.</p>
<p>He decided he was no longer going to look for jobs, but that jobs were going to look for him.</p>
<h2>Laying the foundations for employability</h2>
<p>According to Jeff Gothelf, creating a situation where you are in demand requires you to treat your career as though it were a product you were developing. The journey begins with 4 key questions:</p>
<p><span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">Does anyone know who I am?</span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">&nbsp;</span><span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">Why would they look for me?</span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">&nbsp;</span><span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">How would they find me?</span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">&nbsp;</span><span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">What kind of work do I want?</span>Only by assessing where you are and defining where you want to go can you start making changes to realise your goals. Applying principles of product management to career development, Jeff explored the 5 qualities he believes are the building blocks to becoming &ndash; in his words &ndash; &lsquo;Forever Employable&rsquo;. These are:</p>
<h3>1. Entrepreneurialism</h3>
<p>You might not think of yourself as an entrepreneur, but if you&rsquo;ve ever poured time and effort into any passion project, then you have entrepreneurialism. Rather than shying away from it, lean in.</p>
<h3>2. Self-confidence&nbsp;</h3>
<p>Self-confidence is typically the most challenging issue to overcome, but it can be built by pushing yourself outside your comfort zone and starting small, trying out mediums such as video and podcasting.</p>
<h3>3. Continuous learning</h3>
<p>Results from a poll conducted during the live talk suggested this quality is the one most participants felt confident they were doing: reading articles, listening to podcasts and watching talks are all extremely important in upping your game.</p>
<h3>4. Improvement</h3>
<p>There&rsquo;s no use amassing information if you aren&rsquo;t going to use it. As you pick up new learnings, you will find ways to increase your value, whether it&rsquo;s as a UX designer or an entirely different field.</p>
<h3>5. Reinvention</h3>
<p>To stay relevant, we must learn to rise to the perpetual challenge of taking what got us here and reinventing it to get to the next step. That could mean a new delivery channel or applying the principles of your specialist area to a new field. For Jeff, it meant bringing product thinking to non-product teams such as legal, finance and HR.</p>
<h2><span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">Removing the &lsquo;use-by&rsquo; date on your career</span></h2>
<p>During the insightful talk, Jeff walked the audience through the five steps he found effective in establishing himself as a leader in his field (and thus warding off the competition.)</p>
<h3>Plant the flag</h3>
<p>Make a decision about what domain expertise you want to own. For Jeff, the perfect pitch to plant a flag was Lean UX: it was an area that he not only felt well-versed in and passionate about but one that aligned with current trends and would resonate with his target audience.</p>
<p>To decide where to plant your flag, ask yourself who you want to influence and how big this community could be. The next step? Test your hypothesis; start answering key questions and solving common challenges for your target audience. If they bite, it could be the right place for that flag of yours.</p>
<h3>Tell your story</h3>
<p>What unique story do you have? It may not seem extraordinary on the surface, and you may feel the message you are expressing has been told before. Yet, your unique story is yours alone: it doesn&rsquo;t have to involve celebrities or ground-breaking discoveries to be a compelling story. The experiences you and you alone have gained in your professional (and personal) life can all help in shaping your message, solving a problem and creating an authentic connection with your audience.</p>
<h3>Follow a new path</h3>
<p>As Jeff began to see success through public speaking, teaching classes and book deals, he began to worry that his design skills would suffer. In fact, this was a new path that had emerged; it was an opportunity to tell his story and help others in a new way. He advised attendees of the talk to be ready to take advantage of unexpected paths if they prove to have potential.</p>
<h3>Teach</h3>
<p>It&rsquo;s no secret that teaching makes you better at what you do. Jeff explained how participation in workshops, webinars, podcasts and conferences had all helped to enhance the value he offered his audience and encouraged attendees to do the same &ndash; be it through a MeetUp group or an internal session within your workplace.</p>
<h3>Give it all away</h3>
<p>Simply put, the more you give away, the more opportunities come back to you. Becoming forever employable is not a quick win &ndash; it&rsquo;s an ongoing effort to engage your community and to establish yourself as the go-to person for your subject of expertise. The nature of trends means they are ever-changing: if you want to stay relevant, stay active.</p>

<p>Monica joined BigPay with the vision to build the first South East Asian challenger bank. Prior to BigPay, she started her Fintech journey in Tandem Bank, one of the pioneer challenger banks in London. Her experience in retail and development banks, payment schemes, corporate and startup environments, as well as in Latin America, Europe and Asia has allowed her to develop a diverse and unique perspective and style.</p>
<p>She holds a Masters degree in Information Systems from the London School of Economics and has a background in Industrial Engineering. She is the host of Celebrate You! &ndash; the personal development podcast for the career and entrepreneurial woman.</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s the story of your career so far?</h2>
<p>I was very lucky that since my very first job I started in Product, and I loved it. My career started in a Development Bank in Mexico, I then moved to London to study my masters in LSE and what was supposed to be a one year adventure turned into nine! The first half of my career was in traditional retail banking &ndash; both in Payment Schemes and Banks. That gave me strong foundations to understand how the banking system works. Years later I was blessed with a rare opportunity to join a founding team to start a new bank from scratch; a good bank! &ndash; Tandem Bank; my first Fintech love and the beginning of my career in Fintech and entrepreneurial journey. What seemed like a once in a lifetime opportunity became a life changing opportunity. Few years after starting in Tandem another blessing came up. I moved to Malaysia and joined BigPay as part of the founding team to start another challenger bank, this time a South East Asia one &ndash; where the Fintech market was almost non-existent, the timing was right, and the risk was very high! I called this move the #theasianadventure. For the past ten years I&rsquo;ve also had an alternative career in coaching and all things personal development; my latest project is Celebrate You! &ndash; The personal development podcast for the career and entrepreneurial woman. <h2>What do you love most about what you do?</h2>
<p>I love starting things from scratch &ndash; I like building and connecting ecosystems in my brain and creating new mental models of the world &ndash; from the vision, to the detail, to the hands on, to seeing it live! I also love knowing that my work has direct impact in millions of people&rsquo;s financial lives &ndash; what I love the most is the fulfillment and fun of working on a big challenge with smart and driven people. Finally, I&rsquo;m a people&rsquo;s person, so I love bringing teams together, talking to customers, and understanding the psychology behind customers and products.</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s the most important lesson you learned in 2020 amidst all the Covid-19 disruption?</h2>
<p>It is difficult to choose just one! 2020 was an interesting year for all of us &ndash; regardless of age, race, background or economic status. That was the biggest reminder: we are all humans and we are here to enjoy life and build beautiful relationships and experiences; not to build a career doing something we don&rsquo;t care about. On a personal level, I focused on seeing, acknowledging, and accepting the light and the dark in me, the &ldquo;good&rdquo; and the &ldquo;bad&rdquo; &ndash; I&rsquo;ve learnt that the more we accept ourselves fully, the more we accept others too; overall, self acceptance makes us kinder human beings.</p>
<h2>As far as you can predict, what&rsquo;s on the cards this year for you and your business?</h2>
<p>Oh fun, fun, fun &mdash; lots of projects to work on! As a startup the first few years are very exciting and there is always scope for growth. Whether that is launching new product features, growing our numbers, or engaging better with customers; there is always something interesting and challenging to work on that will have impact on both, customers and the business.</p>
<h2>If you could go back and do it all over again, would you choose a different career path and why?</h2>
<p>Absolutely not! I didn&rsquo;t really know where I was heading when I was working in retail banking. I took a risk joining Tandem and that gave me the opportunity to learn from amazing entrepreneurs and exposure on how to build a bank. I took a bigger risk with BigPay, and that led to a role building a new bank from scratch &ndash; in South East Asia! &ndash; and a ton of personal growth. So despite of the ups and downs and all the challenges, I would do it all over again; maybe this time smarter haha</p>

Women in Tech. It’s a big subject and there’s a lot to talk about.

<p>The gender gap across the tech industry is still prevalent. Futureheads&rsquo; co-founder, Be Kaler Pilgrim, was delighted to join forces with IT consulting firm, Waterstons, to discuss the importance of women in tech and what we can do to attract more women into technology careers.</p>

<p>The panel discussion invited female employees, Nadine Musgrave, Eleni Charalambous and Rhianne Short &ndash; alongside Waterstons CEO, Michael Stirrup &ndash; to share their experiences of being a woman in the UK tech sector. Be facilitated the fascinating discussion on what they believe can be done to encourage more women to consider a career in tech.</p>

<p>Create an equitable recruitment process</p>
<p>With ED&amp;I creeping up the agenda for most businesses, more companies are pledging to change their policies and procedures to attract a more diverse candidate pool. But what steps can businesses take to create real action? Be shared some of her key tips:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Employer brand &ndash; how you speak about yourselves externally and internally as a business is key. The more you talk about your values and culture as one that champions diversity, the more likely you are to attract talent that aligns to that. Inclusive language &ndash; without thinking, we write job descriptions which immediately appeal to one gender more than another, but there are online tools that help avoid this. Diverse interview panel &ndash; if your interview panel isn&rsquo;t diverse, how can you expect your potential employees to be? Build your candidate pool &ndash; keep the chain of conversation open with those that are not suitable right now, but could be in the future. Have a slick strategy and process &ndash; only with a clear goal of creating an inclusive process, can you create real change.</p>
<p>Acknowledge you need to do more</p>
<p>Like Waterstons, many tech businesses today are progressive and forward-looking, but awareness of the need to do more is essential to making consistent change. Michael Stirrup, CEO of Waterstons, spoke of the businesses&rsquo; diverse leadership team, with a previous female CEO and female board members, and how he has personally worked and learned under female managers throughout his career. However, Michael acknowledged how this had encouraged an attitude of &lsquo;what&rsquo;s the problem?&rsquo;, with the business only reflecting in the last few years that diversity and inclusion is an ongoing project &ndash; and that there&rsquo;s always more to be done to encourage women in tech.</p>

<p>Nadine Musgrave, Associate Director spoke of first joining Waterstons 20 years ago and how it felt special to be part of a tech business founded and led by women. She highlighted the importance of these women as acting as a beacon for females to aspire too.</p>

<p>&ldquo;It shows women what they can achieve in the tech industry and that they can be part of a sector that&rsquo;s rapidly growing. Having this visibility is key to breaking barriers and stereotypes of the tech industry as typically &lsquo;male&rsquo;.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Equally, the business had been very supportive of Nadine as a mum of twins, enabling her to progress her career whilst working part time. Working mums are often an overlooked and undervalued sector, but if nurtured, acknowledged and supported can be hugely beneficial for any business. The pandemic has proven that this flexibility works for all employees to the benefit of the business.</p>

<p>&ldquo;That&rsquo;s a big reason why I&rsquo;ve been here for 20 years. The values and culture of Waterstons has meant I never wanted to drift anywhere else. Yes, I&rsquo;ve had other challenges, but a business that would support me as a mum and allow me to continue my career has been key.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Create psychological safety to discuss ED&amp;I</p>
<p>Technology Consultant, Eleni Charalambous, was next to be interviewed by Be &ndash; speaking of her positive experience as a female employee at Waterstons. Asked what she&rsquo;d like to see improved, she identiﬁed the gendered departments across the business, with client services being heavily female but that regardless of area of work, women naturally take on smaller admin tasks in meetings, such as writing notes. Likewise, she noted that it was a similar story for housework tasks in the office too, with female staff generally arranging drinks or cleaning away glasses in meetings.</p>

<p>Be acknowledged how important it was to create a space to discuss these observations, highlighting that the biggest obstacle to progression is these conversations getting buried, and female staff not saying anything.</p>

<p>Rhianne highlighted how important it was to showcase the variety of roles in the tech industry &ndash; many of which would appeal to young women. She highlighted how females are less likely to consider roles in tech due to a misunderstanding about the skills needed, or available routes in.</p>

<p>&ldquo;If I had known my role was in the tech industry, I may not have applied due to it being considered a&rsquo; male industry, however, since being at Waterstons, I&rsquo;ve realised that there are creative and people-focused roles. It&rsquo;s important we make young women aware of the careers available in the tech industry whilst at school and university&rdquo;.</p>

<h2>What&rsquo;s the story of your career so far?</h2>
<p>I started in digital when it was called Multi-Media. I fell into the work, having trained as a librarian and graduated in a recession &ndash; no grad positions for me!</p>
<p>My first role was at Yellow Pages in Australia as a Cybrarian &ndash; so 1990s. As we were all making it up, I asked if I could look after the search engine, because I knew how people searched &ndash; and my career as an IA started.</p>
<p>I&rsquo;ve lived and worked in the US and UK for 15 years, and have been back in Australia for 5 &frac12; years.</p>
<p>My career has been varied; an IA, project manager, product manager, Head of UX, Executive Producer, Consultant. The one I love the most is Career coach, Mentor and Trainer.</p>
<p>In the last year, I have developed a practice supporting senior practitioners move into leadership, and women in Design to thrive in their careers.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s the most important lesson you&rsquo;ve learnt over the course of your career?</h2>
<p>Be authentic and true to yourself!</p>
<p>I love managing people and products, and seeing both grow, but I have struggled all of my career managing up. I&rsquo;ve improved over time, working relationships with the mostly male leadership, but this has been my greatest weakness.</p>
<p>To move into the higher levels of digital management I felt I wasn&rsquo;t myself; I had to be less emotional, female, and kind. I left my last job feeling disheartened, stressed and unconfident in my skills.</p>
<p>I saw Bren&eacute; Brown speak a week after leaving that job, and did the Value assessment. I realised I was not living my values of authenticity and kindness. So any new opportunity must match my values.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>How can organisations ensure they thrive, rather than simply survive, as they attempt to return to a &lsquo;new&rsquo; normal over the next few months?</h2>
<p>There are a number of realisations for organisations:</p>
<ol>
<li>The commute to the inner city office is wasted time &ndash; people love the extra time with their families.</li>
<li>Knowledge workers can be productive working from home. I&rsquo;ve had a number of bosses who have actively discouraged it, thinking we were skiving off.</li>
<li>Child care and flexibility is important to keep women in the workforce. The burden of looking after children intensified as women worked from home.</li>
</ol>
<p>To thrive, organisations should look at what worked well &ndash; with their staff &ndash; and leverage it.</p>
<p>They should:</p>
<p>Plan for the majority of staff to work from home&nbsp;Reimagine work spaces as distributed hubs where people come in collaborate&nbsp;Find the best online tools for collaboration&nbsp;Provide support for their team&rsquo;s mental health&nbsp;Used the money saved from corporate office leases to include child care in their benefits packages&nbsp;</p>
<h2>You&rsquo;ve recently written a blog about the challenges faced by women in UX and in particular by those women who are well into their careers &ndash; can you tell us more about that, and how women can really exploit the opportunities available to them in the digital workplace?</h2>
<p>Many of my peers have been 20-25 years in digital; we are now considering what&rsquo;s next. How can we use our skills and experience in work that gives us joy?</p>
<p>Interface design is commoditised, creating pixel perfect prototypes; it&rsquo;s not the space we want to play in.</p>
<p>We do deep thinking, breaking apart problems and putting together solutions. My friend Tom Coates describes it as finding the nugget of truth that the rest of the model hangs off.</p>
<p>I am introducing the concept of Elder for women in Design; someone brings a depth of experience and wisdom to a role.</p>
<p>Elders don&rsquo;t have to be a Head or Director, they are Certain of their value and place; Grown and grounded in their skills and experience, and a Model by the way they behave, speak and write.</p>
<p>Once we know who and what we offer, we can then find those opportunities.</p>

<h2>What&rsquo;s going to be the biggest challenge in your particular industry over the next 12 months?</h2>
<p>The biggest challenge for women in digital is learning how to blend all aspects of your life into the work you do. We need to find the right blend that gives us financial stability, life with our families, and joy in work.</p>
<p>With the ongoing instability of COVID pandemic changing the way we work, the next 12 months will be stressful. Women need to find their stable base for their lives, learning how to flex with working from home and the rest of life.</p>
<p>It&rsquo;s not about being a superwoman, but finding what new normal feels like and working with it. We have moved from pandemic crisis mode into living with the pandemic; therefore we need change our lives in response to it.</p>

<p>The thought of a job interview can be nerve-wracking, particularly for those who haven&rsquo;t been in an interview situation for a long time, years perhaps. Here are our tips to help you feel prepared for the interview, and how to follow up when that fantastic job offer comes along.</p>

<p><span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">Prepare to stand out at interview:</span>&nbsp;Do your research! Check out your interviewers on Linkedin; get to know their background. You may have shared connections, or interests! Check out the product, be ready to give balanced feedback about what you like, and ideas for improvements. Prepare a list of questions; sometimes a great question is as good as a great answer. If you can ask them a question that really makes them think, challenges their assumptions or fuels further debate, they&rsquo;ll remember it!</p>
<p><span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">Do your reading:</span>&nbsp;Here are some of the most important technology developments around at the moment, so make sure you&rsquo;ve done your homework if the job is tech-related:</p>
<p>Healthcare: Data privacy and innovation within telemedicine&nbsp;Education: Adaptive content &amp; investment in online learning&nbsp;Fintech: strategic partnerships and marketplaces&nbsp;Insurance: AI for risk management &amp; case management<span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">Following up after an interview:</span>&nbsp;Sending a positive follow-up email can leave a great final impression on the hirer, but be mindful that the reader is likely to be time-poor so keep it brief. Thank them for their time and reaffirm your interest in the position. If something didn&rsquo;t go well, acknowledge it, and offer new suggestions having reflected on the question or task.</p>
<p><span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">Negotiating salary following a job offer:</span>&nbsp;You performed fantastically at the interview and they&rsquo;ve offered you the job, so now&rsquo;s the time to discuss salary which many can find tricky. Try and get an understanding of the salary on offer prior to communicating your expectations, give context around your thoughts and offer some level of benchmarking to show you know the industry. Communicate other motivations for joining the business as well as financial ones; employers want to hire candidates that are invested in their brand and product; while money is important, it shouldn&rsquo;t be the primary motivator.</p>

Jamie Perlmutter

<p>Jamie has worked in the tech/digital sector for over a decade and since joining Futureheads in 2016, he&rsquo;s helped a number of leading businesses to scale and achieve their strategic and commercial goals.<br>&nbsp;<br>His recruitment mantra (inspired by a poster in one of our meeting rooms) is to work hard and be nice to people. In practice, this means Jamie strives to go the extra mile, providing clear channels of communication and leveraging his problem-solving skills to create positive experiences for candidates and clients alike.<br>&nbsp;<br>Jamie&rsquo;s a hands-on recruiter and people manager whose experience includes both embedded and 360 contingency recruitment, spanning all talent disciplines across the product development lifecycle. However, his sweet spot is Product Design, UX, Service Design and User Research.<br>&nbsp;<br>Outside of work, when Jamie&rsquo;s not busy being a dad to his young son, you&rsquo;ll either find him at gigs, eating fancy burgers or complaining from the North Bank at the Emirates Stadium.&nbsp;</p>

AJ Phipps

<p>Ashleigh-Jean, better known as AJ, spent 7 years in sales before finding her home in recruitment 4 years ago. Having honed her skills in the cybersecurity world, AJ is excited to bring her blend of tech and creative passions to lead our Product Management recruitment here at Futureheads.</p>
<p>Specialising in placing product leaders across complex technology ecosystems, she focuses on roles spanning product strategy, user experience design, technical roadmapping, and AI-driven innovation. Working with anyone from start-ups to recently IPO'd companies and candidates as a career matchmaker, AJ leverages her deep understanding of technical frameworks, agile methodologies, and emerging tech trends to connect brilliant people with employers they would love to work for.</p>
<p>Outside of work, if AJ is not recruiting, hosting events or advocating for DEI, you can find her wearing her pink suit and disco heels watching Broadway shows, finding the best eateries in London and geeking out on anything AI and Tech!</p>
